Gluten Free Orange Poppy Seed Muffins
These Gluten Free Orange Poppy Seed Muffins are the perfect treat to make with all the citrus in season right now. You can make them in one bowl in less than 5 minutes. Plus, they are secretly healthy!
Oat Flour. The base of these muffins is Oat Flour, which is simply ground up rolled oats. You can purchase Oat Flour pre-made (like this), or buy Rolled Oats (like these) and grind them yourself in a blender or food processor!
Orange. Between the zest and the juice, using fresh and juicy oranges is the key to delicious orange flavor in this recipe. If you prefer a more traditional Lemon recipe, I’ve got one for Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins as well as a Lemon Blueberry Loaf.
Honey. Honey serves as a natural sweetener in this recipe. I tried to make an Orange Muffin recipe without any sweetener, but found it a bit too bitter. Just a quarter cup of honey goes a long way in sweetening these muffins, while keeping the taste natural and not overpoweringly tart.
Yogurt. The Greek Yogurt adds a ton of moisture as well as protein to these muffins. You could sub Icelandic Yogurt or a plan Whole Milk yogurt. Try to use a yogurt with more fat content, though. It will have a lot more flavor as well as moisture.
Eggs. A couple eggs work as binders and holding the Orange Poppy Muffins together nicely. If you are a vegan or allergic to eggs, you can easily sub this with a Flax Egg! Just take 2 Tbsp of Ground Flax (I love this one), mix with 4 Tbsp water, and let it sit until it forms a gel.
Can I make regular size muffins?
Yes, you will just need to bake them for a bit longer, and probably can make half as many. Start with 20 minutes, and then check on them to make sure they don’t brown.
Can I make a bread / loaf?
Yes, same thing as the larger muffins – you will just need to bake for a longer amount of time. Start with 35 minutes, checking on it every 5 minutes.
Can I make it dairy free?
The Greek Yogurt adds lots of moisture and protein, but if you want to keep these dairy free, you could sub in a Vegan Yogurt like Coconut Yogurt or Almond Milk yogurt. Or, you could sub in some Apple sauce, but you may get a bit of an Apple taste.
Can I skip the Poppy Seeds?
I mean, technically yes, but you shouldn’t! They add a sweetness and distinct flavor that really make these muffins pop. You can get a jar on Amazon for less than $5 here.
While this One Bowl Recipe is quite simple and only requires basic ingredients, there are a few simple tools/gadgets that will make your life even easier!
A Zester / Microplane. “Zesting” your orange simply means grating off the colored part of the rind. There’s a lot of flavor in this part. You could use a cheese grater or even a knife and your hands, but have a Zester is a real game changer. I HIGHLY recommend this one, which I have; a friend bought it for me before I had a job interview with a little note saying “you’re going to do *grate!*” It was so thoughtful. I don’t know what I did before I had it!
A Silicone Mini Muffin Tray. Sure, you could use any mini muffin tray you have. But have you TRIED a silicone one?! Once you do, its hard to go back. They are naturally no stick, so you don’t need any liners. Once the tray cools down, you just pop the muffins out! They come out clean and simple. Plus, silicone is dishwasher safe. I got mine off Amazon for less than 10 bucks! Get yours here.
A good whisk. Since some ingredients in this recipe can get clumpy, (i.e. the yogurt), a good whisk is imperative to mixing everything up well. In a pinch, you could always use a good ol’ fashion fork, but a good whisk will be much easier.

Gluten Free Orange Poppy Seed Muffins
- 1/3 Cup Oil
- 1/3 Cup Greek Yogurt
- 2 Large Eggs
- 1/3 Cup Honey
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 Orange, juiced and zested
- 1.5 Cup Oat Flour
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 Tbsp Poppy Seeds
For frosting (optional)
- 2 Tbsp Coconut Butter
- Preheat oven to 350 and spray a silicone mini muffin tin.
- Zest and juice 1 orange into a large bowl. Add all remaining wet ingredients into the bowl and whisk to combine.
- Add in the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix!
- Spoon the mixture into the muffin tin. If mixture seems runny, let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken up. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes.
- If you want to frost it, melt some coconut butter (not coconut oil!) in a microwave safe bowl, and drizzle on top. Finish with some extra orange zest for garnish. Enjoy immediately, refrigerate for up to a week, or freeze for up to 6 months!
